9 Celebrity Inspired Tricks To Get The Glow
Celebrities. You can spot them a mile off. They have skin so dewy and bright they look like they must surely stay indoors all day drinking coconut water and getting snake venom facials. But what is their real secret? We did our research and explored the teachings of celebrity nutritionists - and they´re not quite as extreme as you´d think. And here is what we came up with, because - let´s face it - who doesn´t want a body like Elle Macpherson and skin like Miranda Kerr? (A personal dermatologist, make-up artist and nutritionist would be helpful too, but hey, we can´t have everything).
1. Start your day like Reese Witherspoon: Drink the Glowing Green Smoothie (#GGS)
If you are currently suffering with sluggish bowels and poor elimination, it could be because you’re not getting enough fibre. When your bowels are sluggish, the toxins will be offloaded onto your skin. This is exacerbated by dehydration and eating a low fibre, high meat diet. Not only does the #GGS contain a huge amount of fibre - 12g per 1 litre; it will also rehydrate you, which is perfect for first thing in the morning. Your body will also be able to absorb and utilise the nutrients of green leafy vegetables in the #GGS easily, because they are broken down into a liquid form. Nutritionist Kimberly Snyder, the creator of the #GGS, says on her blog, “Nutrients are encased inside plant cells and getting their benefits requires these cells´ walls to be ruptured”, which happens when you blend all of the ingredients into a smoothie form. Kimberly recommends the #GGS to all of her readers and celebrity clients. Kimberly Snyder´s clients include Drew Barrymore, Reese Witherspoon and Channing Tatum.
2. Tame your hormones
Actress Megan Fox ditched the dairy in her diet believing it to be "hard on hormones" - but it turns out there are many ways to balance out your hormones.
What you need to be wary of is having high oestrogen levels. Oestrogen is a sex hormone, which acts as a “chemical messenger” in your body. If your oestrogen levels are too high, it can trigger cyclical skin outbreaks, and what´s more, high oestrogen levels are also associated with several serious diseases. Did you know that men are just as likely to suffer from oestrogen dominance as women?
Oestrogen dominance is caused by the xeno-oestrogens in certain foods, bottled water, cosmetics, alcohol, pollution, body care products and by being on the pill.
We must therefore focus on bringing our oestrogen levels down to a healthy benchmark. Here are some simple ways to do it:
- Eating whole grains. They have fibrous compounds which can block harmful oestrogens.
- Going organic. Conventionally grown produce may contain oestrogen-enhancing pesticides.
- Eating less meat. This brings the animal´s own oestrogen into your body.
- Relish red and orange fruits. Citrus fruits such as oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, and lemons contain d-limonene which helps detoxify oestrogen.
- Taking a probiotic. Gut bacteria has been proven to help remove oestrogenic compounds from the body.
- Eliminating soy from your diet. Soy can be found as an ingredient of many processed foods, as well as in soy-based foods such as tofu.
- Make friends with the cruciferous veg family. Eating cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli can increase the rate at which the liver changes oestrogen into a water-soluble form for excretion.
- Enjoying moderate exercise daily. Studies have shown that 30 minutes of exercise a day is linked to lowered oestrogen levels.
- Filling up on beetroot and goji berries. These are “methylators” which help rid your body of “bad oestrogen.” Try this beetroot recipe.
3. Do as supermodels Elle Macpherson and Candice Swanepoel do and sip on spirulina
Have you ever tried the green algae regularly consumed by supermodels? Well, you should!
Spirulina contains a specific type of bacteria called “cyanobacteria”, which is an accumulator of heavy minerals, meaning that it will reduce the heavy metal toxicity in your tissue. Heavy metals occur in our environment both naturally and from pollution, as well as in commercial products. Some examples are arsenic, lead, and mercury (typically found in fish). The good news is that spirulina has been shown to remove over 85% of arsenic in tissue - that’s powerful!
Elle includes spirulina in her “super elixir”, and regularly adds it to her smoothies. Candice also loves spirulina; she says it contains “vitamins B and E, is a great source of antioxidants, improves digestion and helps your body to detox.” Although it tastes bad on its own, you can add it to smoothies and the taste can very easily be disguised. Try this smoothie bowl and you´ll see what we mean. Okay, so it may look a strange colour, but it´s absolutely delicious!
Spirulina also works excellently when added to homemade beauty products! Take a look at this face mask by Madeleine Shaw.
4. Zinc about it like Shailene Woodley
Adding more zinc to your diet can be a great way to get that celebrity glow in our skin. A zinc deficiency can also exacerbate oestrogen load. Zinc is important for the synthesis of new DNA and is fundamental to cell growth, meaning it’s vital for achieving young, plump looking skin. It can also help to regulate oil glands and balance your hormones. An all-rounder, other benefits of zinc include promoting a healthy glow by carrying vitamin A to your skin, aiding with wound healing, stretch marks, acne and eczema. Shailene likes to snack on seaweed and cacao chocolate to get her fix of the beauty mineral. She says, “raw chocolate, hands down, the best gift to human beings.”
Sources of zinc: nuts, seafood (especially oysters), lentils, wholegrains, coconut, raw cacao, seeds (especially pumpkin), eggs, seaweeds, and ginger. Be sure to add these foods to your daily diet for the next 7 days. Take a look at this great recipe by Ella Woodward for inspiration: carrot, ginger and coconut soup topped with pumpkin seeds.
5. Add some zest to your morning and feel like an angel
Miranda Kerr kickstarts every day with this easy-to-adopt habit. She says: "I drink a glass of warm water with the juice of half an organic lemon each morning. Warm lemon water in the morning helps kick start the digestion process for the rest of the day. It’s also a morning ritual that cleanses the system, boosts your immune system and balances pH levels because lemons are very alkalizing. They are also abundant in vitamin C, which promotes healing and health." Hot water also helps to put pressure on your bowels and stimulate release. It improves circulation, helping to ensure efficient distribution of nutrients and oxygen to your cells, which yep, you guessed it, makes you glow! In addition, the vitamin C added by the lemon helps to decrease wrinkles and blemishes and to combat free radical damage. Add a dash of cayenne pepper to yours for its anti-bacterial properties like Victoria´s Secret model Elsa Hosk who also swears by drinking “lots of warm water in the morning with ginger, cayenne and lemon juice.”
6. Get in touch with your spiritual side; de-stress like Gisele
“There is no cosmetic for beauty like happiness” – Maria Mitchell.
If you want to get the glow, it´s important to remember the effects stress have on your body and how these will manifest in your appearance.
When we´re stressed, our need for nutrients is estimated to double, we have more risk of nutrient deficiency and our digestion is impaired. Stress is also believed to exacerbate skin disorders. There is evidence that even wound healing is impaired by chronic stress.
So, what can we do to de-stress?
Steal supermodel Gisele Bundchen’s habits, and start practicing yoga daily for the next 14 days. Gisele often posts pictures of her yoga sessions on Instagram, with captions such as “when you connect with the fire within you, anything is possible.” Yoga works to improve digestion and circulation. When your body has better blood flow, it naturally produces glowing skin. Plus, research has proven how effective yoga is for decreasing anxiety and making you feel more positive. 7. Trade in your smart phone for a good book
Actresses such as Emma Watson and Kate Moss are said to be real book worms, who love to sink into a great book at night. You should try to spend each night getting into a good book instead of watching TV or scrolling through your phone. Too often our minds are overwhelmed with screens at work and then again when we get home, often until the minute we close our eyes to sleep. A study has shown that using electronic devices right before bed makes it harder to get to sleep and even makes us feel more tired the next day.
And the beauty benefit? Trading in your phone for a good book will help to reduce dark circles under your eyes. How? Well, if you want glowing skin like Emma, you´ll need to clock in more hours of sleep, which will naturally happen if you´re on your phone less. The science behind it says that there is a significant reduction in skin barrier function recovery as a result of sleep deprivation, meaning that when you´re lacking sleep, your skin will look dull.
8. Dry brush for runway worthy skin
This will stimulate the body´s circulation and lymphatic system. It can also help with bloating because massaging the lymph nodes helps the body shed excess water and toxins. Immediately after dry brushing, you will notice not only how smooth your skin is. Dry brushing has also been known to make people feel more energised! Miranda Kerr is a fan of this technique, saying, "Dry body brushing is an integral part of my daily regime. It’s a great way to get the circulation going, remove dead skin cells, aid lymphatic drainage, detoxify your system and keep your skin smooth all over. I start with my feet and legs and work my way up in quick gentle strokes… it needn’t be too time consuming and just takes a few minutes before jumping into the shower."
9. Get red carpet ready with an Epsom salt bath
When Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence wants to get ready for a big event, she takes an Epsom salt bath. Her personal trainer, Dalton Wong, says “I gave Jennifer some Epsom salts to bathe in which really helps to get rid of any bloating in the body. It´s a great trick that anyone can use.” Not only will this help to relieve stress, but due to its high mineral content, will help to turn rough, dry skin into smooth, soft skin. It also helps to neutralize toxins and aids in protecting the body from heavy metals. Add a tablespoon of coconut oil to the bath as well to make your skin look and feel extra amazing.
